XLR To RCA Output Adapter Set
Pure Conversion. Uncompromised Integrity.
While many systems require a single-ended connection, the conversion from a balanced signal to an RCA output is often a point of significant signal degradation. Standard adaptors frequently introduce distortion or electrical instability. At MSB, we believe the transition to single-ended should never be a compromise. Our XLR to RCA Adaptors are engineered to preserve the full resolution and dynamic authority of your MSB DAC, ensuring your signal remains as pure as the moment it was converted.
The Problem with Proximity
In high-end audio, the output stage of a DAC is an incredibly sensitive environment. Traditional internal conversion methods use transformers that can introduce unwanted magnetic and sonic variations to these delicate analog components. Furthermore, placing these transformers in close proximity to the DAC circuitry can lead to signal cross-talk. To solve this, we moved the conversion away from the DAC’s output stage and into a sleek, inline unit. This allows your signal to remain fully balanced for as long as possible, converting it only when it reaches the amplifier—far from the sensitive analog circuitry of your source.
Beyond the Standard Transformer
While a standard transformer is a common solution for signal conversion, it is often limited by parasitic effects and physical constraints. MSB utilizes a higher-performance concept: the Transmission Line BALUN (BALanced to UNbalanced). By using a high-performance transformer core wound with a precision twisted pair of wires—a transmission line—we create a DC-coupled circuit that runs directly from the input XLR signal pins to the RCA output.
Restoring Signal Balance
An XLR balanced cable carries signal currents on two dedicated pins, with external EMI noise contained on the shield ground. In a standard RCA connection, both the noise and signal current flow on the same conductor (the shield), creating ambiguity in the current flow. If a balanced source is simply shorted to an RCA ground, the resulting distortion can be significant. If the negative phase is left disconnected, half the signal is lost. The MSB BALUN resolves this by turning unbalanced signal current into a magnetic field within the transformer core. This field generates an opposing current that restores signal balance from the perspective of the source. The result? Both signal phases of your MSB DAC contribute to the single-ended signal seen by your amplifier, while the balanced source remains "unaware" that the negative pin is shorted to the shield ground.
Performance and Protection
Because our BALUN design is DC-coupled, it provides the highest possible performance for audio signals. While audio rarely contains significant DC, the transformer core can occasionally reach saturation during true DC signals (such as a constant 1V output), appearing as a momentary "DC short to ground." All MSB DACs are designed to handle these occasional shorts without any impact on performance or longevity. However, because other manufacturers' equipment may not be designed with this level of resilience, we recommend these converters exclusively for use with MSB balanced outputs.
